Warm-up. Ask each person to share very briefly how he or she was first introduced to Jesus. This should not be a complete testimony but a short sketch of who and how and when the first introduction—not necessarily the final conversion or commitment—occurred.

Read aloud and summarize.

The Baptist’s testimony. Questions 1 and 2 are observations. Let the group list as many descriptions of John as it can, then discuss what the descriptions mean and summarize the Baptist’s mission. Likewise, let the group list descriptions of Jesus, then interpret each one and summarize the whole. Next, examine how one or two (such as “the Lamb of God”) apply to you.

Five disciples. Again, the focus here is on what you can learn about Jesus from this passage, and how you can each respond to the testimony with action. Help each other plan applications that include prayer, reliance on God, and action.

Wrap-up.

Worship. The titles given Jesus in this passage are ideal springboards to worship. Praise Him for being the Lamb of God, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the staircase between heaven and earth, the One whose sandal you are unworthy to loose, the King of Israel.
